When anyone thinks of Anime they think of Japan. It’s a fair thought considering Japan is the birthplace of Anime. Anime got its start in Japan in 1917. Ōten Shimokawa, Jun’ichi Kōuchi and Seitaro Kitayama better known as the fathers of anime started out creating propaganda films during WW II. The first featured anime film was Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei and was created as propaganda during the war.
Since this time Anime has become a worldwide phenomenon. It is watched by millions of people around the world in dozens of languages. It is hard to believe that all anime is created in Japan. Well it’s not. Anime is created all over the world and dubbed in multiple languages. As Anime has become more popular over the years companies around the world have sprung up trying to cash in.
For example, Netflix has a large list of anime that they have created for their programming. Other companies such as, Rightstuff Anime (an anime retailer), has produced many anime titles. Some companies simply use the style of anime such as Avatar: The last Airbender. A cartoon made here in America that uses the anime style rather than the American style for drawing cartoons. It went on to be very successful.
Anime may have been born in Japan and is vastly produced more in Japan than any other country, but its influences can be felt around the world. So remember, the next time you are watching one of your favorite anime shows, it may not have been created in Japan.
